Billy’s path to guiding was a bit atypical. He grew up on the Hudson River just outside New York City, where he developed a love for nature and adventure while hiking in the Hudson Highlands. While the outdoors remained a major part of his life, Billy’s journey initially took him in a different direction. He attended Tulane University in New Orleans, where he studied history, then served in the U.S. Army as an infantry officer for six years. After the Army, Billy went to graduate school at Columbia University in New York City, then settled in the Washington, D.C. area to embark on a career in national security. He worked in the Pentagon as a strategist for the Department of Defense before becoming a senior fellow at a prominent think tank, as well as an executive at a technology company.
After more than a decade in D.C., however, Billy realized something was missing and felt adventure calling. So, he quit his job, loaded up his car, and spent the next few months exploring the country. His travels took him from the Shenandoah Valley to the Channel Islands and from the Rio Grande to the Canadian border. Billy got the chance to experience many amazing places on his travels, but he fell in love with Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem. He just knew it was where he belonged – it was the exact kind of adventure he had been seeking. So, Billy made the transition from strategist to naturalist, where every day he gets to help others fall in love with the GYE too.
